Time to Get Vaccinated!

Dear patients,

As you know, our mission at Casco Bay Direct Primary Care involves both patient safety and patient education. For this reason, the physicians at Casco Bay Direct Primary Care strive to follow the most updated evidence based recommendations and guidelines that are supported by our scientific and medical organizations.

So let’s talk about vaccinations! As we gear up for the approaching fall and winter seasons, it’s time to arm ourselves with the best defense against respiratory illnesses. This includes three critical vaccines which are now available: RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus), flu and COVID-19. In this blog, we’ll explore when and how to get each, as well as which combinations are safe and effective.

RSV Vaccine: Protecting the Vulnerable

RSV is a common cause of respiratory infections, particularly in young children and older adults. This vaccine is especially crucial for those at higher risk of severe complications, including infants, the elderly and those who are immunocompromised. RSV can lead to severe respiratory infections, pneumonia and even hospitalization. By getting vaccinated, you are not only protecting yourselves, but also contributing to reducing the overall transmission to the community and helping us protect those who are most vulnerable. Each year in the US, there are between 100-300 deaths in children younger than 5 years old-let’s help protect our kiddos as well as ourselves. The best time to get this vaccine is before the RSV season starts (around September). The RSV vaccine is now available to all adults age 60 and older.

Flu Vaccine: Your Annual Shield

The seasonal flu shot is a cornerstone in preventing influenza. It’s recommended for everyone six months and older. Since flu strains change annually, annual vaccination is necessary to maintain immunity. This vaccine not only protects individuals from flu-related complications but also alleviates the strain on the healthcare system. Timing is key. Getting your flu shot in early fall, before flu activity peaks, ensures you’re protected throughout the season.  The best time to get the flu vaccine is from September through October.

COVID-19 Vaccine: Boosting Your Immunity

COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be a powerful tool in controlling the spread of the virus. Booster shots are now available for your added protection. Consider getting a booster at least 2 months after your last booster dose, or if you’ve recently had COVID-19, waiting three months before getting a booster is advised.

Combining Vaccines: A Smart Strategy

Good news! You can combine these vaccines for convenience and maximal protection. We know from last year's experience, that the flu and COVID-19 vaccines can safely be given together. There is currently no medical evidence suggesting that RSV cannot be given at the same time as well, although anecdotal reports suggest that separating RSV administration by 2 weeks from the date flu/COVID-19 are administered may lower the incidence of post-vaccine side effects, such as body aches, fatigue and headache.

We know that health care decisions must be personalized, so please reach out for advice if you have questions or feel you have unique concerns. We are wishing you a healthy and safe season ahead!
